this morning, congressman paul ryan made a stop in new hampshire. the other half of the republican ticket stayed on message with promises of rescuing the economy and creating jobs. >> we are not simply saying, hire us because the other guy is inadequate and failed. we want to earn this victory. we want to deserve this victory. because what we need, what we as a country need, is a mandate, and the moral authority to get us back on the right track and put the right inside in place to get people out of poverty, to get people out of living paycheck to paycheck. to get people back into jobs with higher take-home pay, so they have economic security, so we can get this economy growing, so we can restore the promise of the american dream for everybody. and that means ideas. we're offering very specific, bold ideas, that are what we need to do to fix the big problems in this country. >> that was paul ryan there this morning in new hampshire, speak of new hampshire. here's a reality check for the romney campaign. in all nine of the battleground state polls th

i want to turn to paul ryan for a quick moment here. this is what the "national review" is reporting this morning. quote, paul ryan has a new mission, reassuring conservative pundits. in the past week, the republican veep has called several conservative commentators, including george will, and in those conversations hz expressed confidence about the republican ticket's chances s schances, fi questions, and asked for frank assessments. what questions could paul ryan might be asked. >> sometimes people on my side are pretty quick to criticize their own. and i think it's a mistake. because really what's happening this presidential campaign is a very vigorous debate, and despite some of the numbers you talked about, there are others. it's only logical for a campaign and someone who's as respected as paul ryan to be regularly reaching out to some of the voices in the -- >> really, is that what he's doing? the he just reaching out or are conservative commentators calling him, giving him an earful, giving the campaign an earful. >> craig, they

they really don't like paul ryan. so you look at all the recent polls, you have four of them. you have reuters, gallup, bloomberg and fox show the president leading. which doesn't mitt romney embrace these polls and acknowledge them? say, this is how it is right now. we're going to change them? >> i think internally they probably are doing a lot of that and trying to figure out how they can shift the narrative, but i think that article is exactly right. yes, mitt romney has been a poor candidate. yes, his comments about the 47% have been truly devastating to this race. i think his problems go way back. they do go to a self-delusion the gop has about the president. that he's awful and a toaster oven could beat him in an election. it's not true. the american people like the president. mitt romney was forced to move so far to the right in the gop primary it's hard to come back to a sensible, mainstream view and his embrace of paul ryan on the ticket just made that that much harder. >> if you're in the wilderness for years and you're not winning and we have 8% unemployment and we

they think they have a rock star in paul ryan. he'll have the opportunity to be fully unleashed in that 90-minute session with joe biden. one of the things he said to chris wallace today is he's not a line guy. he's not going to try to razzle-dazzle you with some line that sounds like it's been coined and in his back pocket for a month and a half. he's going to talk about the policies he and mitt romney want to put into play. he knows that vice president biden is going to come after him on his medicare and budget. >> how's he going to respond? >> they're ready. they want to be able to make the case to the american people that the real threat to medicare and its future is the president's affordable health care act, which they lovingly refer to as obamacare, and the fact that the president's plan extracts $716 million away to pay for that. what paul ryan isn't telling his supporters is that his budget proposal also extracts that amount, but they say they use that to pay down the debt. >> one of the things i'm most looking forward to

one thing to watch also is in the interview show with paul ryan, paul ryan was asked how does your budget plan add up? he says i'm not really sure i have time to explain that right now. you better believe they will press romney about it on wednesday. that's the kind of thing they have to avoid. >> karen, as alice brought up, foreign policy. that being a hot topic issue in the headlines and also for very good reason. americans want to know what president obama's foreign policy is going for. because of situations that seem to be forever in the lexicon of our conversation. certainly in afghanistan with what we've seen happening there. so karen, with that being said, can the president sharpen what he wants to say knowing that's going to be a vulnerable spot for him. mitt romney wants to prove that americans go through strength. and president obama may not have that philosophy. >> peace through strength is a nice slogan, but the president has unfortunately the burden of knowing the facts on the ground and knowing what is possible and what is not possible. foreign policy is complicated. there a
